Good news on Gatsos
3 Dec 2001
By Steve Farrell
THERE’S some good news at last in the debate over speed cameras. Because in future they will have to be painted in a highly visible yellow. Transport Minister John Spellar has announced new camera visibility rules for those police forces allowed to keep money from speeding fines.
On top of the new colour, the rules say: \" no camera should be obscured by bridges, signs, trees or bushes, \" that \" camera warning and speed limit reminders must be placed within one kilometre of fixed and mobile camera sites, \" and that warning signs \" must only be placed in areas where camera housings are placed or where mobile cameras are used. \"
Mobile speed camera operators must now wear fluorescent clothing and their vehicles must have reflective stripes. The rules will affect all the counties participating in the ‘hypothecation’ scheme, namely: Derbyshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Cambridgeshire, Cleveland, Essex, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Strathclyde, Thames Valley, Warwickshire and all of Wales.
The counties concerned have got six months to implement the rule changes, so every existing camera must be resprayed and all newly manufactured ones must comply with the colour legislation from scratch.
