Van den Goorbergh to Miss Imola Round
Thursday, September 23, 2004 -
Yamaha Motor Italia rider Jurgen van den Goorbergh has been forced to miss this weekend's round of the 2004 Supersport World Championship after being admitted to hospital with acute appendicitis today.
The Dutchman was scheduled to go into this weekend's penultimate round of the season at Imola as only one of two riders with a mathematical chance of lifting the title. However Van den Goorbergh went to the circuit's Clinica Mobile after taking unwell and will have his appendix removed at a local hospital this evening. He will miss this weekend's race and it is doubtful if he will ride at the final race of the season, at Magny Cours in France, the following week.
The illness is a blow to Yamaha and Van den Goorbergh, who were looking to overhaul the 38 point deficit to championship leader Karl Muggeridge. However, the manufacturer's championship remains open and Yamaha's four other officially supported riders remain focused on taking victory in this championship.
