Er zijn nog wel wat problemen. O-)

Want…

    • Vietnamees: Eigenlijk nog in ontwikkeling
    • In Vietnam gemaakt Russisch Sputnik: nog in testfase
    • Cubaans: Geen idee eigenlijk.

Toch? :+

Schools lose student meals as communes no longer tagged 'extremely poor'

Meal 1.jpg

Teachers in a remote district of Vietnam's Central Highlands are worried students would drop out of schools in the absence of free meals.

At 11:30 a.m., 176 students at Dak Smar Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Students sit down to their lunch.

Dinh Thi Luyen, a second grader, is full of excitement as she arrives at the table and waits for her food to come.

The Ba Na ethnic minority girl says she loves going to school because she is served good food and does not have to walk all the way back home and return to class every day.

Little does she know, her daily meals at school these days are no longer available and the portion she has been receiving is shared from the allowance provided for other students.
"We feel sorry for students that have lost the allowance and what’s more important, we’re worried they’re gonna quit school now that they’re no longer offered free meals, so this is the only solution we have for now to keep them around," said principal Nguyen The Anh.

Dak Smar School in the eponymous commune lies more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the center of Kbang District in Gia Lai Province. It has around 300 students. Most of them are ethnic Ba Na and come from poor families.

In previous years, Dak Smar Commune was tagged "extremely poor," which means each student attending school is offered VND600,000 ($26.36) and 15 kilos of rice each month.

Teachers also contribute by growing vegetables and raising pigs near the school and raise funds from benefactors to make student meals as nutritious as possible. However, everything has changed for the 2021-2022 school year as the commune has accomplished several agricultural development targets and turn from "extremely poor" to "poor", except for the commune’s Kroi Village. For that reason, all students living outside of Kroi Village are no longer allowed to receive the allowance. The same solution of sharing the allowance to provide meals for all has been applied at other schools across Kbang District.

One of those schools is Krong Secondary School in Krong Commune.

Dinh Hoi, a ninth grader, is among the students who have been offered meals shared via the allowance offered to her friends. Unlike many other students, Hoi is aware of the situation. Upset, she has refused to return to school due to a lack of motivation.

Hoi lives in a village over 10 kilometers from school.

Every Monday, she and her younger sister Dinh Thi Tuyet walk to class together. Tuyet attends a primary boarding school not very far from Hoi’s school. They stay at school until the weekend, when both are picked up by their father.

The father, Dinh Dam, said if authorities have cut the allowance for both of his children then he and his wife have no choice but to keep the girls at home and send them to work on the farm since they could not afford the school fees plus their daily meals.
"For this new school year, we have already had to borrow money to buy them new clothes," he said.

Kbang District now has 558 students in total without sponsored school meals.
"The district has made a proposal to the provincial authorities to look for other sources to support students and ensure they would not skip class," said Y Phuong, deputy chairman of Kbang District.

Torrential rains trigger flooding, disrupt life in central Vietnam (1)

Heavy rainfall has caused rivers to overflow, turned streets into streams and upturned daily life in several central Vietnam provinces over the weekend.

Flood 1.jpg

Streets along the iconic Hoai River in Hoi An Town, Quang Nam Province have been submerged 20-50 cm deep in floodwaters. Quang Nam has recorded rainfall of up to 305 mm since Saturday. Rainfall of 180 mm a day is considered heavy.

A combination of cold spell, tropical convergence and windward terrain of the Truong Son mountain range has caused torrential rains in the central region since Saturday.

Flood 2.jpg

Tran Van Binh, a resident in Hoi An Town’s Minh An Ward, takes his boat to shelter. "This is the second flooding of the year, and many streets are deep under water," Binh said.

Flood 3.jpg

In the mountainous district of Phuoc Son, Quang Nam Province, rising water levels in rivers and streams has worsened the flooding. A road going through Phuoc Thanh Commune is under of 40 cm of water.
"Local authorities have put up ropes and barricades to prevent vehicles from passing through this area," said Ho Van Phuc, Chairman of Phuoc Thanh Commune.

Flood 4.jpg

Landslides have sent rained soil and rocks to a fence protecting the Phuoc Thanh Primary and Secondary School, and this threatens to spill into classrooms. The school has 422 students who have been allowed to stay home for the last few days.

Flood 5.jpg

At 10 a.m. Sunday, the Dak Mi hydropower plant in Phuoc Son District recorded inflows of 5,183 cubic meters per second (cms), and the dam operator decided to discharge 2,373 cms of water. It is forecast that in the next 24 - 48 hours, Quang Nam will continue receiving heavy rainfall of up to 300 mm.

221k cases. 145k in hospital? What are they doing there? The number of hospitalisations should be around 10-12% of the cases, fewer as vaccination rates increase.

From what I've seen people needing hospital treatment is between 1% & 6% which in most cases is due to preexisting condition's.
nialwynn - 19:18 12/8

I AGREE.... hospital rates are extremely high. Vietnam wants to keep hospitalized infected people even though their symptoms are not severe. Those people should be isolated at home. Perhaps authorities are worried they will go out and infect more people. But the huge number of hospitalizations is a huge burden on medical staff and facilities.

In my ten years here, I have seen that people commonly stay in the hospital here for minor illnesses and stays for more serious conditions are about 2-3 times longer than what you would see in the US. Doctors here many times "recommend" these stays which naturally increase costs. For example, my Vietnamese niece stayed in hospital for seven days with a typical, uncomplicated cold and fever. Revenue is the key. And yes, I'm a doctor.

  • Etc.

Vietnam’s Ly Son Island beach to make ocean-fed pool

The construction site for the ocean-fed swimming pool is shown on Ly Son Island, Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam, 2021. Photo: C.H. / Tuoi Tre

Ly Son Island District in Vietnam's Quang Ngai Province has allotted a section of its beach to a saltwater swimming pool project, which received VND5 billion (US$220,000) in investment.

The project was confirmed by Nguyen Quoc Viet, secretary of the Ly Son Party Committee, during an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday.

The pool was approved for both civilian and military use, according to Viet. It will be primarily utilized for military and rescue training, but it will also be opened to the public and tourists during downtime in the army’s schedule.

Spanning 60 meters in length and 35 meters in width, the project has received funding amounting to VND5 billion from the local government’s budget.

The Ly Son District Military Command was appointed as the investor for the project and will have the right to use it as a training site for rescue missions in the future.

Contractors commenced construction on August 2 to meet the completion deadline of December 31.

They are using concrete pillars to delineate the pool from the ocean and deter wind and sea forces.

However, the gaps between these currents will still allow sea currents to enter the pool.
“Ly Son is home to many places of interest and natural wonders, including a pool on top of an inactive volcano,” said Viet.
“The inauguration of the ocean-fed pool will benefit both civilian and military use, as well as bringing tourists to the area and fostering the local economy.”

Mijn lijfspreuk hier in Vietnam.
