Brainwave
Vannacht kreeg ik met een brainwave ineens antwoord op mijn vraag van eergisteren.. Het ging gewoon op z’n Vietnamees: volstrekt onlogisch en dom.
Ter compensatie van deze schandelijke gedachten –sorry, ik was even van het padje af
- nog maar een foto (en weer bijna op het juiste pad terug ) .

Verlichting
Inmiddels is het voor zover ik kan terugdenken al weer dik 10 maanden geleden dat men geld kwam ophalen voor verlichting van een nieuw geasfalteerde weg in ons gehucht. En nog steeds geen gloeilamp te bekennen. Wel 2 nieuwe karaoke-aso’s en een bird nest fabriek met wolkenkrabber-aspiraties in aanbouw.
“Goh, misschien moet ik de slaapkamergordijnen maar open laten. Kunnen ze vanaf het dak van de fabriek met een verrekijker… Toegangsgeld heffen en ze kunnen een mogelijke slechtere opbrengst van de inmiddels minimaal 17-bird-nest-fabrieken-moeten-bijhoudende- doodvermoeide-birdnestenbouwende-bitds een klein beetje compenseren. “
Ter zake. Wat mijn kleine snappertje dan weer niet begrijpt. Op zo’n 1-2 km. van het meer van eergisteren liggen in the middle of nowhere een paar huizen.
Zowel een zijweg…
…als een aftakking daarvan naar twee huizen zijn voorzien van een zeer ruime hoeveelheid min of meer moderne verlichtingsarmaturen.
Zouden de bewoners van deze twee huizen de benodigde dongs echt zelf bij elkaar hebben geschraapt?
Dus waarom (of misschien beter waarvoor) moesten wij dan wel betalen?

Komt door de "verlichte energie" uit de pagode.
Hier spelen een aantal problemen.
1.Mijn slechte ogen, waardoor ik toch wel moeite heb met het zien van kleuren
2.Ik heb deze geautomatiseerd aangepast met Luminar en de door mij gemaakte Looks. Ik heb de instellingen even snel bekeken en volgens mijn bronnen worden bij de in de Look gebruikte instellingen de kleuren niet aangepast, alleen helderheid en contrast.
Misschien dat “Foliage enhancer” hiervoor verantwoordelijk is, hoewel ik ook daarvoor geen agressieve instelling gebruik.
Ik zal de komende dagen (na wat urgentere reparaties) nog eens wat verder experimenteren.

Vietnamese man hospitalized with king cobra still attached to arm

A 38-year-old man in the southern Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh carried a 4.6-kilogram king cobra with him to the hospital after being bitten by the animal.
Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed on Wednesday that they are treating P.V.T., a resident in Tay Ninh Province, about 90 kilometers northwest of the southern metropolis.
According to family members, T. and his son spotted the large snake in their garden at around 7:00 am that same day. T. attempted to catch the snake but ended up being bitten on the leg. He was able to grab the snake’s head.
Family members tied his thigh with elastic bands to prevent the venom from spreading and rushed him to a hospital in Tay Ninh. T. remained conscious and held on tight to the snake’s head, while the animal was wrapping itself around his arm.
Doctors later removed the snake, which measured 2.5 meters long and weighed 4.6 kilograms, from the patient’s arm, cleaned his wound, bandaged his leg, and gave him pain relievers and antibiotics.
T. began having manifestations of cyanosis and difficulty breathing after about 30 minutes.

The patient was placed on a ventilator and transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment. Nguyen Ngoc Sang, a doctor at Cho Ray, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that T. was brought to the infirmary on the afternoon of the same day. He suffered quadriplegic paralysis, dilated pupils, and loss of reflexes, Dr. Sang elaborated, adding that the symptoms indicated serious neurotoxicity caused by the king cobra's venom.
The patient was treated with ten jars of snake venom antiserum and was eventually able to move his arms, legs, and eyes. “Although T. is no longer in a critical state, we still need to closely monitor his cardiovascular conditions, as the bite of a king cobra can also harm the victim’s heart,” Sang stated. The patient still requires support from a ventilator, he added.
A king cobra bite can lead to fatality if not promptly treated as it can cause paralysis of extremities and respiratory muscles, which lead to death from asphyxiation, as well as damaging the heart muscle, resulting in acute heart failure, according to the doctor.

Nog geen tijd gehad om naar de kleuren te kijken. En gisteravond kwam een nieuwe reparatie: bij de douchekraan boven spoot een straaltje water naar buiten. Voorlopig daar de hoofdkraan dichtgedraaid. Zolang er geen gasten komen kan ik dat even voor mij uit schuiven.
En toch weer van het pad af…

Dit zijn volgens mij de enige taaloefeningen, maar dan in het Vietnamees, die ze hier op school krijgen.
Tja, ik dacht, dat ik alle lijken in de kast inmiddels wel kende.
Ik had beter moeten weten.
Zoals ik gisteren al schreef spoot er water bij de douchekraan naar buiten. Omdat ik voor een andere reparatieklus toch onderdelen moe gaan halen heb ik de kraan maar even van de muur gehaald. En het gekloot was meteen duidelijk.
De pijp, waar de kraan op geschroefd wordt, zit te diep in de muur. Dus wat hebben de eikels gedaan? In de moer een dubbele dikke pakkingring gelegd en toen de moer van de kraan erop gedraaid. Omdat er geen ruimte was kon dat hooguit één tot anderhalve slag. En omdat ze dat altijd op z’n Vietnamees doen: vast is vast en dan nog twee slagen erbij. Waar geen ruimte voor was.
Dit alles onder het welbekende motto: “het zit toch?”
Ondertussen was wel de draag van de moer gemold en liet het zaakje na verloop van tijd los. Denkelijk heeft de ander moer, waar de pijp iets verder uit de muur stak, de zaak al die tijd gehouden.
Omdat ik geen zin had om het verbindingsstuk een stuk uit de muur te draaien (geen idee wat je daarmee overhoop haalt) heb ik de de sierplaatjes tussen moer en muur een halve cm. afgeslepen, een enkele pakking in de ,moer gestopt en het zaakje wee gemonteerd. De moer kon nu een stukje verder op de pijp worden geschroefd tot het deel waar de draad nog heel was.
Dus ook maar op z’n Vietnamees: “het zit toch?”
Zoals ik het al vaak op z’n plat-Rotterdams heb gezegd: grote bek, twee linker klauwen en uitsluitend zand onder het schedeldak. Maar ze komen er helaas allemaal mee weg..

Someone to talk to: Young Vietnamese launch mental health app to support peers

Shareapy connects users with strangers willing to listen to their personal problems and offer emotional support.
The app, developed by a team of undergraduate students from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (UT), beat out entrants representing 800 universities from 60 countries to place amongst the top ten winners in the Google-backed Solution Challenge 2020 competition.
The team’s showing marks the highest ever ranking a Vietnamese group has achieved in the annual contest, designed to seek out solutions to local community issues using Google products and platforms.
Young people deserve to be heard
“The contest’s goal is to find solutions to local community problems and we wanted to use it as an opportunity to raise community awareness of mental health,” said Nguyen Thanh Nhan, a third-year computer science major at UT and member of Shareapy’s developer team.
In the same vein, Tran Lam Bao Khang and Vo Ngoc Khanh Linh, both industrial management sophomores at UT, shared their belief that young people need to prioritize their mental health. “As young people ourselves, we fully understand the problems faced by our generation. Most current apps available on the market only aim to satisfy material needs, not emotional ones,” Khang and Linh explained.
As members of UT’s Google Developer Students Club, the trio, along with computer science major Nguyen Dang Huy, looked to use the competition as a way to make a difference in the lives of their peers.
Their efforts resulted in Shareapy — an app that allows users to share personal problems with strangers by creating a community centered on ‘one-way’ sympathy, referring to a culture of showing support without criticism or judgment. “We still have a lot of work we need to do in order to address the needs of our users. Next, we'll need to find a way to enlist the help of doctors and mental health professionals,” the team said. “In the meantime, we are trying our best to refine the app. We plan to launch a test for our users that will assess their mental health condition and offer detailed and useful suggestions.”
The team also admitted that learning the psychology and technology jargon they needed to create the app was another hurdle they had to overcome in the beginning phases of their project.
Still, they remained committed.
Because of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the team was forced to cancel a trip to Google's headquarters in California, the U.S. this year, which would have offered them an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas with industry experts. But they hope to continue improving their app.
An ‘insider's perspective’
The connection the four-team members have to the app extends just beyond being developers. Experiencing mental health issues themselves, they hope to offer an ‘insider's perspective’ to their peers. Linh shared that when depression first hit her at the end of high school, she found solace in journaling and speaking with others about her feelings.
Such personal connections to mental health issues were all the inspiration the team needed to take on the struggle of balancing school and app development. “When we first launched the app, the social distancing measures meant to curb the COVID-19 pandemic were in place so we couldn’t meet in person. We had to move all our meetings online instead,” the team shared. “But it turned out that online meetings were more convenient for us because we didn’t have to waste time traveling and it allowed us to be more flexible about our schedules.”

Naar aanleiding van de gebroken hand van een LF-leerling en mijn twijfels over een aantal zaken Vietnam Deel 2 ontving ik een zeldzame mail van LF.
“Je kunt achter iedere boom wel een dief zien, maar dan kun je niets.”
Daar heeft hij volledig gelijk in.
Maar…
Als ik denk achter een boom iemand te zien, vraag ik met mijn slechte ogen eerst aan Minh of zij iemand ziet. Als zij ook twijfelt vraagt ze aan anderen om bevestiging. Als die wel iemand zien accepteer ik dat als dat ik gelijk had.
In bovenstaand geval waren de door Minh genoemde argumenten, in combinatie met de 60-80% die naar HBO of universiteit kan (door LF eenvoudig afgedaan als “Als we bedrogen worden is dat voor klein geld”) voldoende om “iemand achter een boom te zien”.
Als arme pensionado heb ik trouwens wat andere ideeën over “klein geld”. Een "kleine berekening".
87 leerlingen * VND 300.000 / maand (gemiddelde van ik dacht VND.250.000 voor de lagere klassen en VND.350.000 voor de hogere) = VND 26.000.000
Daarvan 70 % ( gemiddelde tussen 60 en 80% die doorstudeert) = ca. VND 18.000.000 / maand = ca. € 650 / maand dat m.i. ten onrechte wordt uitgekeerd.
Goh, er gaan dagen voorbij dat ik minder te besteden heb…
Sportlessen
Nog wat achtergronden van de sportlessen op school.
Vroeger
Toen Minh nog op de highschool zat kregen de meisjes uitsluitend atletiek: hardlopen, hoog- en verspringen. Dat deden ze in hun gewone schoolkleding.
Heden
Dit hebben we speciaal bij de leerlingen van Minh’s Engelse les nagevraagd.
Jongens
Die spelen voetbal, basketbal, volleybal en doen aan atletiek.
Meisjes
Idem m.u.v. voetbal.
Ze sporten nu wel in sportkleding, jongens en meisjes tegelijk maar niet gezamenlijk.

Toen Minh nog op de highschool zat kregen de meisjes uitsluitend atletiek: hardlopen, hoog- en verspringen. Dat deden ze in hun gewone schoolkleding.

Dit hebben we speciaal bij de leerlingen van Minh’s Engelse les nagevraagd.
Jongens
Die spelen voetbal, basketbal, volleybal en doen aan atletiek.
Meisjes
Idem m.u.v. voetbal.
Ze sporten nu wel in sportkleding, jongens en meisjes tegelijk maar niet gezamenlijk.

Vietnamese teens create novel respirator against coronavirus

With the goal of making a comfortable device that can prevent the spread of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while allowing the wearer to maintain social interactions, two Vietnamese students have successfully created the initial prototype for a new-age respirator.
The device was introduced by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at a workshop jointly held with the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM) in Hanoi on Friday last week. Listed among the UNDP's category of grassroots and social innovations, the portable device impressed audiences at the workshop, which focused on Vietnam’s inclusive innovation policy, particularly strategies for science, technology, and innovation.
The powered air-purifying respirator ‘Vihelm’ — an abbreviation for ‘Vietnamese helmet’ — was created by Do Trong Minh Duc, 16, a student at the Florida-based private K-12 school Montverde Academy, and Tran Nguyen Khanh An, 14, a student at the Hanoi Academy Bilingual International School in the Vietnamese capital city.
Vihelm is a medical respirator built as a portable device that can help the wearer self-quarantine while going about their daily life. The idea behind Vihelm is that wearers can enjoy the freedom of not being put in mandatory 14-day quarantine required for anyone entering Vietnam from abroad.
Duc and An came up with the idea based off requests from their mentors who asked students to create a respirator that not only prevents the spread of COVID-19 but also helps people remain productive while undergoing quarantine in case the pandemic continues to linger. Duc is one of several under-18 overseas students who was repatriated from the U.S. to avoid the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to support from the Vietnamese government.
The second-generation Vihelm respirator, weighing 0.72 kilograms, is seen in a supplied photo.
The battery-powered respirator was designed based on the structure of existing powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR), which meet globally recognized standards and provide wearers with protection 100 times safer than N99 face masks.
One downside of the PAPR, however, is that it is very difficult to wear for extended periods as the wearer cannot scratch their head or face if they feel itchy, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which cites such reasons for the limited implementation of the PAPR in real-life disease prevention.
To address those drawbacks, An and Duc added many components including an air tube, helmet straps, elastic sealing rings, IR glass, a fan, and a glove inside.
The glove is similar to the Gloves Box designs seen in laboratories to support handling the face and head such as scratching, combined with integrated food compartments, according to a promotional video for the product.
Apart from those components, Vihelm also has head-scratch pockets on top of the helmet, which the wearers can use to scratch their heads when they are wearing it for prolonged amounts of time.
Thanks to the innovation, Vihelm users can work continuously for up to four hours without worrying about overheating or itching. They can even feed themselves with the food to be placed in advance inside the helmet’s food compartment.

The respirator can protect the wearer from pathogens with a maximum efficiency of 99.9 percent, according to the results of tests conducted by product developers. The two teenage inventors are improving the device in order to achieve a final model suitable for commercial use.
The Vihelm has been patented and financially invested in by their families from the stage of concept development and design to the launch of the first prototype. The duo is also seeing to attract additional investors.
The two students behind the helmet have registered to compete at the 5th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2020), which is organized by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS).

There is a teahouse in Ho Chi Minh City destined for customers searching for private space to enjoy a cup of tea and conversation all while paying according to their satisfaction with the service.
The teahouse, Zentea, is located in a small valley on Dien Bien Phu Street, Binh Thanh District. Zentea does not have a list of prices for the drinks that it offers. Instead, customers can decide how much they are willing to pay after drinking and using the service.
Depending on the level of customer satisfaction, they will put money into a small box placed on the shelf. The paid money will be used to maintain the teahouse’s operations. "Zentea was launched in May 2018 with a view to creating a peaceful destination for people after days of working hard. Coming here, anyone can feel at home,” said Duong Huu Thuan, one of the young members who run the teahouse. “You can do everything by yourself, choosing a brewing vessel, cups, and some cookies, then you can brew the tea in your favorite way."

The young people behind Zentea share a passion for the many flavors of tea and dried flowers and want to have a place to refresh after being overwhelmed with study and work. “This is the first time I have been to the teahouse, which was introduced to me by a friend. I feel intrigued to know that customers are allowed to serve themselves and to pay at will,” said Tuong Vi, one customer who came to Zentea for the first time. “The teahouse is surrounded by nature, which is suitable for drinking tea. The sound of flowing water soothes me a lot."
Customers at Zentea have the chance to drink warm, fragrant cups of tea and take free weekly classes on calligraphy, flower arrangement, and self-defense martial arts.

Zelf heb ik er bv. zelfverdediging (Hapkido) gedaan, gegeven door een vriendelijke oude man. Die, toen ik google om te zien van wie we les zouden krijgen, in één van zijn stijlen de op één na hoogst gegradueerde ter wereld bleek te zijn. Grootmeester | Korean Martial Arts Center || Ho Sin Sul
Kijk je toch raar op als je die wil beroven.
Dit kwam weer boven omdat ik lang geleden er nog wel eens aan heb gedacht of er hier belangstelling zou zijn voor allerlei activiteiten in één van de overheidsgebouwen. Nou, het antwoord is een ondubbelzinnig “geen enkele”.
Dit tea house –weer eens iets anders dan een coffee-shop -toch eens in gedachten houden. Iets voor als ik een paar dagen in HCM moet blijven na mijn oog-operatie. Die ik i.v.m. Covid-19 nog steeds voor mij uit schuif. Het is gelukkig niet urgent.

Eating in darkness: Saigon restaurant offers dining experience with blind, deaf servers (1)
A restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City has been offering its diners an off-the-beaten-path experience, with blind or deaf people serving the meals.
The name speaks for itself. ‘Noir. Dining in the Dark,’ located on Hai Ba Trung Street in District 1, has diners enjoy their meals in a pitch-black surrounding.
“Every facet of daily life depends on sight. How would your other senses react to being in complete darkness?” the restaurant explained the concept on its website.
“You will embark on a sensory journey into a different world and savor exquisite tastes and textures in complete darkness.
“This multi-sensory dining experience will stimulate your senses and open your mind.”
Visiting the place, diners will be guided by visually impaired staff who “have been specially trained to assist and reassure sighted guests who are in complete darkness.”
The restaurant is part of a series of recreational venues established in the hope of creating jobs for people with vision or hearing impairment. The chain, including a restaurant, a coffee shop, and a spa, currently employs nearly 60 people with either visual or hearing impairment.
Vu Anh Tu, owner of Noir. Dining in the Dark, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that people with impairment often face difficulties in finding jobs, so what he does simply offers them more chances at doing honest work.

At Tu’ restaurant, staff use sign language, body language, and facial expressions to communicate with diners. Employees are also taught foreign languages as the restaurant has become increasingly popular with foreign tourists and expats living in the city. Every new recruit goes through two-month training before starting their job.
Diners coming to the venue are required to put their phones and anything that emits light into a locker before being led by staff into a world of darkness. “At first I was worried whether I could do the job. Now I love my job as it helps me meet many people and build up my self-confidence as other staff members and customers are very friendly,” Tuan Linh, a 30-year-old employee who has hearing loss, told Tuoi Tre.

At Tu’ restaurant, staff use sign language, body language, and facial expressions to communicate with diners. Employees are also taught foreign languages as the restaurant has become increasingly popular with foreign tourists and expats living in the city. Every new recruit goes through two-month training before starting their job.
Diners coming to the venue are required to put their phones and anything that emits light into a locker before being led by staff into a world of darkness. “At first I was worried whether I could do the job. Now I love my job as it helps me meet many people and build up my self-confidence as other staff members and customers are very friendly,” Tuan Linh, a 30-year-old employee who has hearing loss, told Tuoi Tre.

Ik verkloot, jij verkloot, hij verkloot…
…zij verkloten.
Dit zijn volgens mij de enige taaloefeningen, maar dan in het Vietnamees, die ze hier op school krijgen.
Tja, ik dacht, dat ik alle lijken in de kast inmiddels wel kende.
Ik had beter moeten weten.
Zoals ik gisteren al schreef spoot er water bij de douchekraan naar buiten. Omdat ik voor een andere reparatieklus toch onderdelen moe gaan halen heb ik de kraan maar even van de muur gehaald. En het gekloot was meteen duidelijk.
De pijp, waar de kraan op geschroefd wordt, zit te diep in de muur. Dus wat hebben de eikels gedaan? In de moer een dubbele dikke pakkingring gelegd en toen de moer van de kraan erop gedraaid. Omdat er geen ruimte was kon dat hooguit één tot anderhalve slag. En omdat ze dat altijd op z’n Vietnamees doen: vast is vast en dan nog twee slagen erbij. Waar geen ruimte voor was.
Dit alles onder het welbekende motto: “het zit toch?”
Ondertussen was wel de draag van de moer gemold en liet het zaakje na verloop van tijd los. Denkelijk heeft de ander moer, waar de pijp iets verder uit de muur stak, de zaak al die tijd gehouden.
Omdat ik geen zin had om het verbindingsstuk een stuk uit de muur te draaien (geen idee wat je daarmee overhoop haalt) heb ik de de sierplaatjes tussen moer en muur een halve cm. afgeslepen, een enkele pakking in de ,moer gestopt en het zaakje wee gemonteerd. De moer kon nu een stukje verder op de pijp worden geschroefd tot het deel waar de draad nog heel was.
Dus ook maar op z’n Vietnamees: “het zit toch?”
Zoals ik het al vaak op z’n plat-Rotterdams heb gezegd: grote bek, twee linker klauwen en uitsluitend zand onder het schedeldak. Maar ze komen er helaas allemaal mee weg..

Onder creativiteit versta ik iets geheel anders als wat er hier tijdens de dagelijkse desinteresse-uren (in NL werktijd of een baan genoemd) uit de twee linkerklauwen komt.
Het enige dat ik toegeef is, dat mijn creativiteit op het gebied van beoordelen van wat men “resultaten” noemt hun voorstellingsvermogen verre te boven gaat. “Het zit toch?” Verder komt deze intelligentsia niet.

Klein wereldje
Het blijft een klein wereldje hier. Deze man vertelde aan zijn jongere broer dat er een buitenlander langs was komen fietsen die een reeks foto’s had gemaakt van de manier waarop ze rijstpapier maken..
De jongere broer en zijn vrouw begonnen meteen te lachen: “Dat is Fred”. Zij hebben samen de rijstpellerij, die in mijn e-book is opgenomen (zie onderaan).
Minh hoorde dit verhaal afgelopen weekend van de vrouw van de rijstpellerij. Hun dochtertje zit bij Minh op Engelse les. Eén van de leerlingen die ik nog een keer op de foto wil zetten.
Ze vertelde ook nog dat er op dit moment nauwelijks werk voor hun pellerij is. De afgelopen rijstperiode was erg droog dus is er maar heel weinig rijst geoogst.

Topaz Sharpen AI
Weer even een zijpaadje. Een paar weken geleden was Topaz Sharpen AI in de aanbieding. Zie Sharpen AI – Topaz Labs
Tijdens testen had ik soms wat twijfels. Sommige foto’s werden duidelijk (wat) scherper, bij anders, vaak wat oudere foto’s, was het effect soms niet of nauwelijks te zien.Ook werd dan vaak de ruis verscherpt.
Ondanks mijn twijfels heb ik het module toch gekocht, met als idee er toch wat meer mee te gaan doen.
Hierbij een test. Dit is de beruchte opname die heel Vietnam schokte, omdat het historische Hoi An de achtergrond was. Ja, ja, hysterisch nietwaar?
Ik heb voor de persoon een masker gebruikt en het verscherpen met opzet voor deze demo hoog gezet (90). Het resultaat is met name in het haar en het punthoedje te zien.: .
Het programma kan ook zelf een optimale verscherping berekenen. Dat was voor deze foto 13.
Je kunt altijd een proefversie downloaden om zelf de resultaten uit te testen. Ik hoor graag de ervaringen.
Een ander alternatief is MyHeritage. Daar kun je foto’s laten inkleuren en verbeteren. Verbeteren gaat een stuk verder dan alleen verscherpen. Ook ruis verwijderen, huid verbeteren etc. Je moet wel lid zijn, anders kun je maar een beperkt aantal foto’s per maand bewerken. Andere nadelen zijn het logo op de verbeterde foto en het feit dat je niets zelf kunt instellen. De vergelijking met bovenstaande foto is dus niet helemaal eerlijk.
