One day in Binh Duong: a tour itinerary

Discover Phu An bamboo village, pick fruit in Lai Thieu orchard, or enjoy the tranquil ambiance of Hoi Khanh pagoda in our one-day guide to Binh Duong.

Phu An Bamboo Village
Forty kilometers to the north of Saigon, Phu An Bamboo Village, also known as Phu An Ecological Bamboo Museum and Botanical Reserve, is one of the biggest bamboo museums in Southeast Asia.

With over 350 varieties of bamboo, including 20 rare, endangered ones, the reserve at 124 Street 744, Phu An Commune, Ben Cat District is a research center and conservation site for bamboo.

The village made its debut in 1999 and won the biennial UNDP Equator prize, which recognizes community efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, in 2010.

The village serves local dishes like banh xeo (Vietnamese pancake) and grilled meat. However, these have to be ordered in advance. An entrance ticket costs VND20,000 ($0.9) per person.

Located on a hill in Chanh Nghia Ward of Thu Dau Mot Town, 25 minutes by motorbike from Phu An Bamboo Village, Tay Tang Pagoda is surrounded by lush foliage. Enclosed by tall towering trees, its square-shaped presbytery features a 15-meter-tall stupa, the pagoda’s focal point.

Behind the presbytery is the record-holding statue of Bodhidharma, a semi-legendary monk. The statue is the biggest made of hair in Vietnam. It was sculpted in 1982 and is nearly three meters high. Except for the frame made of iron, the main material is hair collected from Buddhist followers. After a major restoration in 1992, the pagoda, built in 1928, now resembles a Tibetan Tantra temple.

Hoi Khanh Pagoda

Two kilometers from Tay Tang Pagoda is Hoi Khanh Pagoda, home to the longest Reclining Buddha statue in Vietnam. Resting on the pagoda’s roof is a statue of the Buddha attaining Nirvana that measures 52 meters long and 12 meters wide. Its impressive measurements gained it the title of "Asia’s Longest Reclining Buddha Statue on a Pagoda’s Roof" from India-based Asia Book of Records in 2013.

The Reclining Buddha can be reached via 49 stairs, each stair symbolizing a year that the Buddha spread the message of Buddhism in the world.

Covering around 13,000 square meters, the pagoda, built in 1741, is mainly made of wood and stands out for its meticulously carved gilded Arhat and terracotta sculptures of spirit animals. Outside the main hall, the ancient Tu Van Tower is intricately carved.

Wind and Water Cafe

Binh 3.jpg

Wind and Water Cafe. Photo acquired by VnExpress.

Six minutes by car from Tay Tang Pagoda is one of Binh Duong’s prides and joys, a green-oriented cafe that goes by wNw for wind and water. Set in a tropical landscape, this work of art is built from 7,000 bamboo trees, a hallmark symbol of Vietnamese culture. What’s most special about the architecture is how natural wind energy and cool water are used to boost air ventilation.

Enclosing the dome-shaped cafe/bar is an artificial lake. The shallow lake is lined with black stones to give off the illusion of depth. The level of the building is lower than the surrounding lake, creating an opening for the breeze to enter.

It spans over 1,403 square meters in Alley 6/28T, Zone 3 of Phu Tho District in Thu Dau Mot Town. The cafe serves all kinds of food and beverages ranging from VND25,000 to 55,000 and converts into a bar at night.

Voortschrijdend inzicht? Sorry, bestaat hier niet. O-)

Natural reef ‘completely destroyed’ by tourism project

Reef 1.jpg

Part of the Da Nhay, a natural reef along the beach of Ke Ga in Vietnam's south central province of Binh Thuan, has been destroyed, January 2021. Photo by VnExpress/Viet Quoc.

A popular reef along the Ke Ga Beach in the south central province of Binh Thuan has been destroyed by a private tourism project. The natural reef, called Da Nhay (jumping rock), stretches more than 200 meters in Ham Thuan Nam District, with rocks of many different sizes and shapes lying adjacent to each other. Its unique appearance and structure and location by the beach has been a tourist attraction for years.

However, residents of Tan Thanh Commune have reported parts of the reef being damaged, with blocks of natural rocks smashed and leveled on a section of around 30 meters.

The reef now looks no different than a heap of debris at some construction site, they’ve said.

Le Van Hung, 32, who fishes in the area, said such huge damage to the reef cannot be fixed. "It is such a pity that the magnificent reef has been completely destroyed," he said.

Hong Thanh Huyen, chairman of Tan Thanh Commune, said the area where the part of the reef has been vandalized lies in front of a tourism project. Around a year ago, the investor has started pumping sand all over to lift the foundation for the project and create a path all the way from their project to the reef. Then they arbitrarily smashed the reef with the intention of creating a way to the sea.

For now, what can be seen at the scene is a huge amount of white sand that stretches from the project to the area near the beach, and blocks of concrete placed in between the natural rocks that have been smashed. It is assumed that those blocks will be used to build an embankment.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources of Ham Thuan Nam District has asked the investor to put the project on hold pending more inspections. "It is now confirmed that the investor has been building the project illegally," Huyen said, without explaining why the work of destroying the natural reef has been carried out under the nose of the authorities for a year.

Vietnam has most adult gamers globally: report

Game 1.jpg

Vietnam has the highest number of adult gamers in the world in 2020, according to a recently released global consumer survey by German data portal Statista.

Ninety four percent of Vietnamese said they gamed at least occasionally while nearly 20 percent said they were frequent gamers, according to the Statista Global Consumer Survey.

Eighty five percent said they gamed on smartphones.

Besides Vietnam, other developing countries like Nigeria, Thailand and the Philippines also reported high numbers of adult gamers, aided by their younger demographics. Smartphone gaming has won over people not previously invested in the activity by giving them easy access at low or no initial cost.

The Statista Global Consumer Survey polled 1,000-4,000 respondents between 18 and 64 years of age in 55 countries and territories.

Vietnam is a growing market for e-sport and online games. An earlier Statista report said online game revenues in the country this year are expected to top $10.1 million, up 16 percent from 2019.

Another study by market research company Niko Partners and Google earlier this year forecast Vietnam’s e-sport market to achieve the highest five-year compounded annual growth rate in Southeast Asia, from 2018, of 28 percent.

:X Dus eigen creativiteit is geboden. In Vietnam Deel 2 was te lezen hoe en in Three jailed in HCMC for opposing government - VnExpress International waarom. :X :X

Tja, dom geboren buitenlander… O-)

Fried bananas but with a French twist

In his first few days, a 50-year-old French man in Saigon grew exasperated selling only a few fried bananas. However, things quickly looked up.

Around the end of November, the tall silhouette of a Western man behind a cart selling fried bananas started intriguing residents on District 1’s Tran Dinh Xu and Nguyen Cu Trinh streets. His sign reads "fried bananas, fried pineapples", all priced at VND10,000 ($0.43) a pop.

Fabrice, owner of this little fried goods stand, is a French tourist ‘trapped’ in Vietnam due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fried 1.jpg

From prepping and selling fried cakes off a small sidewalk cart, Fabrice has received a lot of attention from both locals and tourists alike. Photo by VnExpress/Tam Linh.

Every day from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m, he takes out his cart, heads to a convenience store and nearby local market to acquire ingredients. Around 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. he cleans up and heads home.

Fabrice only operates in the morning since he thinks his fried fare makes for a good student or working person breakfast. In the afternoon, more stalls open making business more competitive. His workstation includes a small gas stove, a large bowl of batter, a rack with fried food, cutting boards, fresh bananas, pineapples, spatulas and forks.

Pineapples are cut into circles and marinated in a tub of sugar overnight. Unsalted butter is the secret weapon that distinguishes Fabrice’s fried produce from others fried in oil. Anh Thu, a patron said: "This fried cake has a buttery smell and is less greasy in comparison to traditional Vietnamese fried bananas."

Fried 2.jpg

During his first few days of business, Fabrice only coated the fruit in batter and fried them fresh to order. A cake takes five minutes to cook. Sometimes, when the coating was too thick it would cost an additional five minutes to obtain the right texture.

Afraid of making customers wait too long, the chef would press his hands together to gesture in apology. "I think having the frying process on display is important to show that the goods are always fresh," he said.

Vietnamese patrons tend to prefer greater sweetness, which always makes Fabrice smile. He explained how his recipe would not change and that everyone has their own palate. "If my cakes are good, customers will return. My stand has been quite busy lately," he proudly stated.

Fabrice’s customers mainly comprise nearby locals, students from a neighborhood school, and occasional passersby. A local shopkeeper said his only criticism is the French chef’s topless work breaks.

The idea for a fried cake stall came about during the pandemic. After the country's three-week social distancing campaign in April, Fabrice wandered about to escape his stuffy hotel room. "I want to be physically active, browse the market, cook, relish in traditional dishes, try out eateries while gaining an income," he said.

He noticed that banana and pineapple are two fruits frequently used in both sweet and savory Vietnamese dishes. The experience of a traditional street food, fried banana, along with the nostalgia of Western banana pancakes led to his own rendition.

Fried 3.jpg

Despite knowing neither English nor Vietnamese, Fabrice refuses to let language barriers become an obstacle and instead relies on body language and gestures to serve his customers.

In January, the French tourist entered Vietnam on a visa that expired in April. He belongs to the group of 3,000 foreigners stuck in Vietnam as of April due to the pandemic. Fabrice was also one of the many tourists who extended their visas and stayed back instead of returning home.

He said his family lived in Saigon in the 70s before coming to France, adding his biological mother is Vietnamese with Western features. "That's why I always desired to return to Vietnam."

Fabrice currently lives in a nearby hotel. He said if this stand is enough to make a living, he would maintain this job.

Man burns down own motorbike after pulled over by traffic police in Vietnam

Burn 1.jpg

A photo supplied by Hai Duong City police officers show Hoang Van Trung’s incinerated vehicle after his quarrel with traffic police.

After being pulled over by traffic police for missing rear-view mirrors and helmets, motorbike driver Hoang Van Trung showed dissent before setting fire to his own vehicle in Vietnam.

Authorities in Hai Duong City, the capital of the namesake northern province, have opened an investigation into the obstruction of law enforcement charges of a man who burned down his motorbike after being questioned by traffic police, said the traffic police unit of the city on Saturday.

The situation took place on Friday afternoon on Tran Hung Dao Street, Hai Duong, as a patrol cohort of traffic police officers detected Trung, 40, from Hai Duong Province, committing multiple offenses, including running the lights and driving without a crash helmet or left rear-view mirror.

After he was signaled to pull over, Trung showed lack of cooperation, had a quarrel with the officers, and promptly used his lighter to set his motorbike ablaze.

The fire consumed the vehicle within minutes.

The traffic police officers called on the city’s investigation police and forensic science team to make a report of the case, while Trung was escorted to the local police bureau.

Vietnam launches first scientific exploration tour

Science 1.jpg

A scientific exploration tour called ExploraScience Quy Nhon has just been unveiled in the south-central province of Binh Dinh, marking the first of its kind in Vietnam.

The experimental tour began its pilot operation in early 2019 which is expected to be completed in 2021, according to Nguyen Van Dung, director of the Binh Dinh Department of Tourism.

The scientific exploration tour has seven showcase rooms with different themes including exploration, learning about the universe, the solar system, the earth and natural resources, and laws of nature. There are 94 scientific models, most of which were created by the experts of ExploraScience Quy Nhon following an exact ratio with real objects. “Among tools of scientific dissemination is a 1.5m-diameter globe simulating the planet that is worth nearly VND3 billion [US$129,690] and imported from Germany," said Hoang Thi Hang, a staff member from the Center for Scientific Discovery in Binh Dinh Province. “Many phenomena are simulated on the globe’s surface like climate change, volcanoes, earthquakes, and seasons. "Visitors can interact directly with the globe through its touch screen."

Most of the tourists, especially students, showed their joy while listening to the scientific knowledge delivered by the staff at the center. “I find it interesting here," Nguyen Van Thong, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City, said. "This is a useful space to discover, especially for children and students, who are both able to play and learn new things.” Currently, ExploraScience Quy Nhơn offers a scientific exploration tour with three sections: paying visits to showcase space, taking part in a scientific show, and playing games indoors and outdoors.

In Vietnam, 15-year-old girl pregnant, gives birth to baby in secret

Baby 1.jpg

A teenage student from southern Vietnam was pregnant and gave birth to a baby with nobody, including her family, knowing about the entire procedure despite going to school every day.

D., a woman living in Da Bac Commune of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province’s Chau Duc District who is the mother of the girl in question, found out about the situation only after hearing a baby’s cry while sleeping at around 4:00 am or 5:00 am on January 3.

At that time, T. was shocked to see her daughter, 15-year-old T., give birth to a baby girl weighing about 2.5kg. T. and her baby were then taken to the local medical center for healthcare. According to D., T. and her baby were weak, with the newborn having jaundice, as T. received no nourishment and proper care during her pregnancy.

D. said that she had divorced her husband and raised two children alone, of which T. is the oldest, born in 2006.
As D. often came home late after work, she did not have time to pay attention to her children.

T. is supposed to be in ninth grade at her age, but she is currently a seventh-grade student at Vo Truong Toan Middle School in Da Bac Commune after repeating two grades in elementary school.

The school management board and the teachers also failed to see the fact that T. was pregnant.
T. told D. the man who made her pregnant was a person she knows through social media.
Currently, although D. has yet to report the issue to local authorities, the Da Bac Commune police reported it to Chau Duc District’s police.

According to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper’s research, the man T. mentioned hails from Suoi Nghe Commune in the same district and is working in Ho Chi Minh City. The man already went to see D.’s family to negotiate child support.

On Tuesday, a leader of the Chau Duc Party Committee said that he had directed relveant departments to clarify the case and deal with it in accordance with the law, making it clear how the school and the teachers knew nothing about T.’s pregnancy.

New contemporary art space brings sculptures, paintings to pine forest in northern Vietnam

Art 1.jpg

This image shows the main gallery rooms of the Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum in Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam. Photo: T.Dieu / Tuoi Tre

An array of contemporary artworks by emerging artists from all over the world is being exhibited at a new art space located in a pine forest in northern Vietnam. The exhibition is organized to celebrate the launch of Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum, a space dedicated to contemporary art located in Flamingo Dai Lai Resort in Vinh Phuc Province.

This is the first private art museum established in the northern province, said Duong Quang Ung, deputy director of the Vinh Phuc Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. Prior to its official launch, the Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum was already known for hosting multiple outdoor art exhibitions.

The eccentric design of its gallery rooms, which are assembled from discarded containers and flamboyantly colored, also helped boost its popularity as a tourist attraction. The gallery rooms are located at the center of the museum premise, serving as the exhibition, creative and collaborative space for residing artists.

It is currently accommodating 56 sculpture works of various materials, including rock, wood, and stainless steel, besides over 70 paintings. The repertoire of artworks was accumulated through five iterations of art in the forest, an annual not-for-profit event held at the Flamingo Dai Lai Resort and funded by the Flamingo Group.

Launched in 2015, the project has made hundreds of artworks more accessible to the public, including pieces from Vietnamese, Canadian, American, Japan, Nepalese, Italian, Thai, Korean, Singaporean, and Spanish artists, among others.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Vu Hong Nguyen, director, co-founder, and curator of the museum, said the space offers free entry to all visitors. Nguyen also revealed plans to organize more iterations of art in the forest in the future, as a diverse and prolific collection obtained from the events will allow the museum to finance itself using entrance fees in five years’ time.

The space is looking to organize art tours for students as well. “We would like to contribute to the progress of art education in Vietnam, for the future generations of Vietnam should appreciate art and go to art spaces as often as going to the cinema or listen to music,” Nguyen declared.

Below are the artworks on display at the Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum:

Misschien is Julio inmiddels buschauffeur in Hanoi geworden.

'The sky is the limit geworden'

The sky is the limit geworden."

Kumru: "Speel open kaart.
