Laconi taken to hospital after crash

During the first lap of the morning's free practice session, Regis Laconi (Ducati DFX) crashed in the section between Turn 11 and Turn 12. Unfortunately in the crash the French rider, despite not hitting any obstacle, suffered a severe trauma to the cervical vertebrae. Transported by helicopter to the nearby Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, Laconi is reported as being on the danger list. The serious injuries suffered mean that an operation will be required, which will be carried out by a neurological specialist in the next few hours.

Laconi vecht voor zijn leven

Na de gigantische klapper tussen Brendan Roberts en Max Neukirchner werd het Superbike paddock in Kyalami andermaal opgeschrikt door een zware klapper, deze keer van DFX Corser rijder Régis Laconi die momenteel in het ziekenhuis vecht voor zijn leven.

Al in de eerste ronde van de eerste vrije training op het Kyalami circuit kwam Régis Laconi tussen bocht 11 en 12 ongelukkig ten val waarbij vooral zijn hals een flinke tik heeft gekregen.

Nadat de sessie werd stilgelegd is de Fransman per helikopter vervoerd naar het Sunninghill ziekenhuis in Johannesburg waar de doktoren proberen om de diverse bloedingen in zijn hoofd onder controle te krijgen. Laconi ligt momenteel in diepe coma en men vreest voor het ergste.

Regis Laconi has been placed in a pharmacological coma following an accident at the start of World Superbike free practice at Kyalami.

The Frenchman crashed on his first lap around the South African circuit, his head making hard contact with the gravel to warrant immediate medical attention.

Stabilised at the track side before being airlifted to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg, Laconi is suspected to have fractured his cervical vertebrae.

Laconi was subsequently placed into a coma for the time being in order for them to monitor his progress. Nonetheless, while Laconi is considered to be on the 'danger list', a press release issued by the DFX Corse team says Laconi has seemingly not suffered any neurological trauma and is able to move his limbs.

He is scheduled to be operated on tonight when two plates will be inserted to support his vertebral column where he has suffered his injury.

The team stated that he came off the track at a high-speed left hander, violently striking the top of his body and his head.

GRAVE INCIDENTE A REGIS LACONI
Un grave incidente per Regis Laconi all’inizio del primo turno prove libere del mattino. Il
francese, appena entrato in pista, è volato in una velocissima curva a sinistra urtando
violentemente la parte alta del tronco e la testa. Le condizioni del transalpino sono
apparse immediatamente serie tanto che le assistenze sanitarie hanno stabilizzato il pilota
sul posto trasportandolo successivamente con la massima attenzione al centro medico
del tracciato. Dopo un attento controllo è stato deciso il trasferimento con elicottero al
Sunninghill Hospital di Sandton per gli accertamenti del caso. I vari esami svolti nel
pomeriggio hanno evidenziato la sospetta frattura di cinque vertebre senza però lesioni al
midollo. La successiva TAC, pur evidenziando un fortissimo trauma cranico, sembra aver
fugato ogni complicazione di carattere neurologico. Regis Laconi muove gli arti ed al
momento è in coma farmacologico. Sarà operato prima della notte per un intervento che
prevede l’inserimento due placche a sostegno della colonna vertebrale al momento in
sofferenza. La squadra, turbata da questa terribile caduta, si stringe intorno al proprio
pilota ed augura una pronta ripresa al forte atleta transalpino.
Seguiranno nella giornata di domani altri comunicati stampa relativi ai bollettini medici
emessi dall’ospedale.

ERNSTIG ONGEVAL OP REGIS LACONI
Een ernstig ongeval met Regis Laconi in de eerste ronde van de ochtend vrij praktijk. De
Frans, kom gewoon op de weg, vloog in een snelle bocht naar links stakingen
heftig de bovenste romp en hoofd. De voorwaarden zijn transalpijns
onmiddellijk te zien in de serie, zodat de gezondheidszorg heeft gestabiliseerd de piloot
in opeenvolgende vervoerders met de grootst mogelijke aandacht voor het medisch centrum
van het pad. Na een zorgvuldige inspectie werd besloten tot de overdracht aan de helikopter
Sunninghill Ziekenhuis in Sandton voor het onderzoek van de zaak. De verschillende proeven uitgevoerd
middag bleek de vermoedelijke breuk van vijf wervels zonder schade aan
merg. De volgende TAC, terwijl dat een zeer sterke kop schade lijkt te hebben
weggenomen een neurologische complicatie van karakter. Regis Laconi beweging van de ledematen en
moment is in een coma medicatie. Het zal worden gedaan voordat de nacht voor een toespraak die
betreft het invoegen van twee platen ter ondersteuning van de wervelkolom op het moment
lijden. Het team, last van deze vreselijke vallen, verzamelt rond zijn
piloot en wensen een spoedig herstel van de sterke trans-atleet.
Zal volgen tijdens de dag van morgen andere persberichten in verband met medische bulletins
vrijkomen uit het ziekenhuis.

Ik hoop het niet aangezien ik Regis persoonlijk een goeie rijder vond, maar vrees het ergste.
Craig Jones werd namelijk ook in een kunstmatige coma gehouden, waarna zijn ouders besloten hem van de beademing te halen.

Ik hoop het niet aangezien ik Regis persoonlijk een goeie rijder vond, maar vrees het ergste.

Laconi mag dan een aantal wervels in zijn gebroken hebben, het belangrijkste is dat het merg en de hersenstam nog intakt is. Bij Jones was dat niet het geval.

Regis Laconi in a serious but stable condition - Friday evening update

Following his crash Regis Laconi was taken by helicopter to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. After undergoing checks later in the evening it was possible to have a better idea of the Frenchman's condition.


Laconi suffered two broken cervical vertebrae (C3 and C5), severe concussion and a contusion of the lung. A CT scan for eventual neurological damage, proved to be negative and for the moment he is in an induced coma and in a stable condition. After consultation with Dr. Maurizio Zorzi, the South African neuro-surgeon who was called from Pretoria to check on the patient's condition, it was decided not to operate immediately and to postpone any eventual intervention for a few days.


Barring complications, a further three weeks will be required before a clear clinical picture of the situation can be made, during which the French rider will have to remain totally immobile.

The planned operation to help ease Regis Laconi's condition following his practice crash at Kyalami on Friday has been delayed for the time being on the advice of a neurological expert.

The French rider crashed heavily at the start of free practice for the South African round of the World Superbike Championship, and required immediate attention at the side of the circuit before being airlifted to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. Initial diagnosis pointed to spinal fractures, but it wasn't until Laconi was safely installed in hospital that a full evaluation of his injuries could be carried out.

Investigations on Friday evening confirmed that the DFX Corse rider had indeed suffered back injuries, with the cervical vertebrae C3 and C5 both broken, along with severe concussion and a lung contusion, but a CT scan proved to be negative in the search for nerve damage.

While the latter news is encouraging, Laconi remains in an induced coma, although his condition has been upgraded to 'stable'. The operation initially planned to install plates to stabilise the Frenchman's spinal injuries, however, has been delayed for at least 48 hours on the advice of South African neurosurgeon Dr Maurizio Zorzi, who was flown in from Pretoria to offer his opinion on the extent of the veteran's injuries.

The official WSBK website claims that, provided there are no further complications, it could still be as long as three weeks before an accurate prognosis of Laconi's condition is possible, during which time he will remain immobilised.
