Yamaha to Speed Release of 1500cc Sportbike

Yamaha will accelerate the release of their much-rumored 1500cc sportbike more than two years ahead of schedule, according to industry sources that cannot comment on the record due to confidentiality agreements.
Dubbed the R15, the bike was due to be released in 2010 but it will be released in limited production later this year due in part to the success of the big-bore Kawasak1 ZX-14. The bike will produce over 200 horsepower in stock trim and will be in showrooms August 1.
Reportedly the decision to release the bike early was also due to the new NHRA Pro Stock rules allowing modern 4-valve EFI engines to compete. Sources state that Yamaha is currently working on an all-billet 1655cc engine for NHRA competition and will form a two-bike Pro Stock team which will debut later this season.
“This bike has been in development for the past four years,” stated the source. “The factory saw the market changes happening and decided to accelerate the process. Their intention is to absolutely own the big-bore market segment.”
“The NHRA Pro Stock class provides the perfect marketing opportunity to gain immediate exposure to this motorcycle,” continued the source. “They wanted to get the highest-profile rider available so they contracted Larry McBride to be the lead rider. Angie McBride will run the number two bike and Larry will legally adopt Angie so they can run as a father and daughter team.”
“Larry will run as the Spiderman and Angie will run as the Catwoman,” he continued. “She will have the complete Catwoman look complete with stiletto-heeled riding boots. It should get the factory and the new R15 a lot of attention with the 18-34 male demographic.”
