I've not been silent on my criticism of Crutchlow this season. As a former fan of his back in the Tech 3 days (yes, I own plenty of his old gear), I'm very disappointed that his one year tenure at Ducati has been such a complete and utter failure.
Not all of this is Cal's fault. There can never be an excuse for a professional racing team to experience some of the mechanical problems he's had. Brakes failing after a lap? Electronics that loose the position on the track (Hayden had that problem the year before)? WTF Ducati? You see this sometimes at the Club Level, not at MotoGP! Someone needs a good kick in the ass for those kinds of things.
The problems with the Ducati turning are pretty well known. It's not an easy fix and requires a complete redesign. Anybody that has watched more than 2 races has that figured out. There are also some positives. The motor makes the most overall power on the grid. There are some usability issues of that power but at a track with some long straights it does just fine. There are also some unique bits such as the slipper clutch that seem to be ahead of the competition. Overall, the bike isn't where it needs to be. Closer compared to last year, but no cigar. The day the savior was hired he stated he needed 4 or 5 races to gather data and then the redesign would be on the grid in 2015. No secrets there and all public knowledge. 2014 would be a "spoiler" year. Bloody the competition's nose wherever possible. A couple of podiums and a speed record so far. Not great but a lot better than 2013.
The first person a rider needs to beat is his teammates. Same equipment, same design and support staff. Cal hasn't been close to anyone this year other than Hernandez who is riding the 2013 boat anchor. He has consistently been last or next to last (of the Ducati's) each and every practice, qualifying and race session. If you throw out the race results, Cal is still at the bottom in nearly every category among the Ducati racers.
Finally, why I would never let him on the grid again:
Attitudes are infectious. Cal's is really bad. At some point it becomes poisonous (well past that in his case) and infects the team. The "I'm not changing my riding style", "why risk getting hurt", "it's not my fault", all spread like the plague to even the tire changers. Stop the spread and quarantine the source.
Ducati depends on it's racing program to sell bikes. They sell around 44,000 a year globally compared to the millions the competition sells. Expensive, exotic, boutique bikes meant for those who appreciate them. It's a David vs. Goliath scenario at every level of competition. A rider trashing the bike/bikes is unforgivable. Cal is probably the stupidest rider on the fucking planet for forgetting "don't bite the hand that feeds you". There is no positive outcome by letting Cal even touch another Ducati on the grid. I don't see a "miracle result" coming Cal's way.
Each and every bike on the gird has some secrets. They each handle a little different (even bikes on the same team), different power characteristics, electronics, and so on. You hear all the time that XX is a Honda track, XX is a Yamaha, the Ducati's do good here etc. Leaving Cal in the pitbox means that he will know and hear all that is being done for the 2015 bike. No way, let him take the knowledge of the 2014 bike with him.
He has been an outcast for the last 2 months now at Ducati. In effect, he is not even a member of the Ducati team, just a corpse on the bike. Check out the pre-race press releases and he isn't mentioned in most. Birthday party for Gigi, not even invited but his pit crew was. WDW, he was there but not officially announced or acknowledged. I thought it was odd that he was shown on the big screens just a second or 2 while all the other racers were "on" all the time.
Hopefully, Cal will learn from this. There will be some challenges at LCR. He's not going to be able to "ride like Lorenzo" and be successful. He will need to adapt his riding to the bike and hopefully come up with an answer to Marquez on machinery that is just a step behind. I doubt very seriously he will ever ride as a factory rider ever again, those brief days are now done. I've personally lost a lot of respect and admiration I had for him but hope things work out for him at LCR. The MotoGP grid is better with Cal in it, just not on my favorite or any team I root for.
Volledig mee eens.

Cal is overschat.
