Khanh won first prize at the contest. This year, organizers received more than 1,595 entries from 256 professional and amateur photographers. Overall, there were 20 winning photos (two first, four second, six third and eight consolation prizes).

"The colorful brocade and innocence of the children urged me to capture this moment. I learned that the meticulousness of the embroidery could indicate the success of H'mong women in nurturing family happiness,” Khanh said.

He also won the third prize with his photo set "Spring in Lao Xa," depicting scenes in the village filled with cherry and plum blossoms.

“The Beauty of Remote Borders” by Pham Hoai Nam, taken in Lung Tao Commune, Dong Van District, was also awarded first prize.

"When I spotted these ethnic children carrying herbs against the backdrop of majestic mountains, I hurriedly parked my car and reached for my camera," Nam recalled.

Contest jury head Trieu Thi Tinh, deputy director of Ha Giang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the two first prizes displayed a harmony between landscapes and people, which is imbued with the rich culture of the northern province.

“Sacred Lung Cu Flag Tower” by Nguyen Minh Tan won second prize.
The tower was built at the summit of the Dragon (Rong) Mountain, which is 1,700 meters above sea level. The image was taken by fly-cam.

“The Road I Traveled On” by Vu Ngoc Tuan also won second prize. It was taken on the way to Dong Van District at 6 a.m. in March last year.

“Coming to the Highlands”, taken by Phan Quoc Bao, shows a British tourist conquering the Ma Pi Leng Pass by bicycle.

Another second prize winner is the photo set "Fire Dance Festival of the Pa Then" by Nguyen Thanh Son.

Third prize winner “The Highland Child”, photographed in Ta Su Choong Commune, Hoang Su Phi District, depicts Giang Thi Nu, a H'mong child cuddling her rhizomyinae or mountain rat.

Author Nguyen Thi Ly Giang compared the rocky highland to a love song that keeps you wanting to return.

Another third prize winner is called “Khau Vai Love Market” by Bui Viet Duc. He took this photo in December last year in Meo Vac District.

Ha 10.jpg

“Snub-nosed Langur, the Pride of Ha Giang” by Le Khac Quyet won third prize. This is a black-haired, white-faced primate that often lives in isolated forests in the high mountains of northern Vietnam. Ha Giang has about 60 individuals in its Khau Ca Nature Reserve.

Ha 11.jpg

“Simple Happiness” won the consolation prize. Le Hong Duc took the photo of a H'mong family in Lao Xa Village, Sung La Commune, Dong Van District. "The family is gathered together in a simple life, not noisy, not rich but still full of joy and laughter. That’s simple happiness," Duc said.

“Start” also won a consolation prize. This photo, taken in October 2020 by photographer Le Huy Long, captured the excitement of runners crossing the starting line of a marathon along Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Slither over Yen Bai’s lovely landscapes on a zipline

Visitors to Yen Bai Province can now enjoy a zipline tour over the beautiful mountains and rice fields of Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai districts.

Aeris Hill amusement park in Tu Le Commune, Van Chan District recently launched the service, saying it is Vietnam’s longest zipline tour, stretching 1.2 kilometers. It offers a panoramic view of a place popular with photographers and trekkers for its bucolic, majestic beauty.

A station at each end of the line has alert staff to ensure users land safely. People weighing less than 50 kg have a 10 kg sandbag attached to them to ensure safety. The trip takes one to two minutes.

Diem Huong, 25, of Hanoi said: "I was a bit scared at how it was like jumping off a cliff. Prior to ziplining, I was afraid of heights and had safety concerns, but after the trip I felt great. It's so cool."

The second part of the zipline, stretching over 200 meters, requires the addition of a parachute to the customer’s back to slow them down. "Even though the view from the second part cannot compare with that of the first (nearly 1 kilometers), it gave more of an adrenaline rush," Huong said.

Minh Duc, 27, of Hanoi said he was surprised the zipline in Tu Le was that long, the longest he had ever experienced. "We zipline over very diverse terrain, from terraced rice fields to rivers, mountains, and forests."

There are 15 sets of helmets and harnesses. So if you are traveling in a large group, you have to take turns.

Aeris Hill is open on all days except Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets start at VND200,000 ($8.7) per person which includes a zipline tour and other activities like zorbing, high rope games, and rock climbing.

How to raise smarter children

Smart 1.jpg

Story telling helps children develop their language skills and build good characters.

Experts in cognitive development believe the first five years of a child's life is the most important stage in intelligence formation and brain function.

What your child experience in his or her early years shapes who he or she will be, influences their harmony, their emotions, their performance in school, their relationships, and their future.

Here are seven tips on how you can influence your child’s development through simple interactions:

Play and talk to your children more often
Parents can show their love by playing and talking to their children. This can help them to build emotional intelligence. When children spend more quality time interacting with their parents, it will develop their emotional and social skills faster than those who do not. By hugging, singing, and doing household chores together, parents and children can build up wonderful memories and create joy around them.

Turn mistakes into lessons
Teach children to view their mistakes as learning opportunities instead of failures. For example, if they fall during play, they should seek to identify the cause and learn to be more careful in the future, rather than stopping play entirely. Through such lessons, they can learn to pick themselves up and take away important life skills such as resiliency and competency. At Kinderland, children are given ample opportunities to build their resilience through mistakes. It does not matter if the child cannot spell rightly on their first few tries. Through Kinderland's phonics program, the school helps children to gain more confidence in being able to spell on their own.

Reading and storytelling with children
Reading and sharing stories can help children get to know sounds, words, language and develop their literacy skills. Stories can also spark your child’s imagination and curiosity, bringing them to amazing places and introducing them to extraordinary characters. Children exercise their conceptual understanding and vocabulary when answering parents’ questions and queries. Above it all, children get to spend quality time with their parents while learning in comfort!

Story time has always been children’s favorite at Kinderland. It is no surprise why the school's children are always so excited as they immerse themselves in stories that their teachers share creatively through role playing or hand puppet shows.

Smart 2.jpg

Children discover the world through reading.

Develop your child’s reading habit
The best way to raise a love for and interest in reading is to simply read to your child. When children see parents reading frequently, they will subconsciously imitate the adults' actions. During weekends, family can have a great time going to a bookstore and allow their children to choose books or comics that they are interested in under guidance. There is no need to wait till your child is able to read to buy a book. Parents can engage their child by discussing the pictures and characters in the book, asking questions related to the story, to help them develop their literacy skills and spur their creativity.

Encourage them to do exercise
Physical exercise not only makes children healthy, but also helps them to develop intelligence as regular exercises will help to regulate blood flow to the brain and regenerate brain cells. Kinderland's Kinderfit program allows its children to acquire fundamental movement skills while the development of self-confidence, responsible habits, team spirit, and a positive attitude toward a healthy lifestyle are emphasized.

Physical exercise not only makes children healthy, but also helps them develop intelligence.

Nurture their creativity
Creativity will also help to develop problem-solving skills, innovation, and discovery in children. Allow children to have their space to draw or attempt art and crafts independently. Motivate them to express themselve and give compliments to their creation. Allow children to solve daily challenges and seek to find alternate resolutions as well.

Smart 4.jpg

Children develop creativity through painting.

Growing with music
Music can benefit your child in many areas such as language, math, concentration, and social skills, among others. When children's moving follows the music, the brain parts that control the hearing and movement functions both work at the same time. That also happens when children play musical instruments, then children can learn how to coordinate between their eyes, ears, hands, feet, and the whole body. Body vibrations from a singing child contribute to lowering cortisol (stress hormone) levels, releasing endorphins, and making your child feel happy. Learning to play musical instruments requires children to use multiple senses that enhance brain functions.

“Teach children to view their mistakes as learning opportunities instead of failures.”

“Exposing your baby to music from a young age helps stimulate brain development.”
“Music can benefit your child in many areas such as language, math, concentration, and social skills, among others.”
