Eat like a local: a tour to explore Saigon's street food scene
Saigon has been dubbed a paradise for street food-obsessed travelers, with these five famed areas not to be missed.
Come nightfall, the purveyors of delicacies from all over Vietnam pop up by the thousand all over the city. Every night you can see locals huddle around low tables indulging their taste buds late into the night.
Co Giang Street in District 1
Just a five-minute drive from iconic Ben Thanh Market, Co Giang Street is home to many street food stalls established decades ago. For foodies, the street should be included on their travel bucket list.
Don't forget to drop by Ms. Tuyen's shop that specializes in rice noodles with grilled pork. White rice noodles are topped with crispy, sweet-tasty grilled pork, fried spring rolls, crush peanuts, oily green onion oil, pickled carrots and daikon radish. Bean sprouts, cucumber slices, and herbs make up the bottom of the noodle bowl.

Not far from Tuyen's shop is Hoang Yen food stall where you can find the true taste of grilled beef in lolot pepper leaves, or bo la lot. Ingredients include minced beef mixed with garlic and some spices, mixed well, stuffed into lolot leaves and rolled up like cigars. Piper lolot leaves are often used to wrap meat across Vietnam and Laos. They are served up on a platter with fresh rice noodles, a herby-lettuce salad, rice paper and a dipping sauce.

On Co Giang Street, there is a long-standing Chinese sweet soup stall without a name that should not be missed by any foodie. There are various tasty sweet soups at the stall like sweet egg soup with tea, water chestnut and lotus seed sweet soup and dried grape sweet soup.
Van Kiep Street in Binh Thanh District
Showcasing dozens of different dishes along a couple hundred meters, Van Kiep Street straddles the border of two of Saigon’s most vibrant districts, Phu Nhuan and Binh Thanh.
Most food stalls here don’t have names or addresses and you never know when they will actually be open.
More outstanding than any other street food stalls on Van Kiep Street is No.104 stall, a small and trendy spot specializing in grilled octopus and very well-known by many young Saigonese.

The spicy, marinated octopus grilled over a coal barbecue on the sidewalk with its fragrant smoke wafting into the street can attract anyone lost in this food maze street.
Don't forget to visit a food stall at 55/19 Van Kiep Street where the stall owner will serve you Vietnamese steamed rice rolls, or banh cuon, including a layer of golden egg. Hailing from the country’s northern region, rice rolls have become a staple breakfast dish in Vietnamese cuisine. The stall only opens in the morning from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Near the intersection with Phan Xich Long Street in Phu Nhuan District stand the two best bun mam (fermented thick Vietnamese vermicelli soup) stalls.
Vinh Khanh Street in District 4
Once a favorite spot of notorious gangsters, Vinh Khanh Street has been turned into a paradise for seafood. The area is abuzz with hundreds of sidewalk restaurants offering different types of seafood like oysters, lobsters, sushi and snails.
The street, only about 2.5 kilometers from Ben Thanh Market, is reachable by motorbike in about 10 minutes. Head to Ong Lanh Bridge, which is the boundary between Districts 1 and 4, turn left at the end and take a right turn onto Vinh Khanh Street.
Vinh Khanh Street is dubbed as Saigon's seafood paradise
The most famous joint on the strip is Oc Oanh at 534 Vinh Khanh Street that is renowned for its fried sea snails with salt and chili and grilled scallops with spring onions and peanuts.
Located at 122 Vinh Khanh Street, Sushi Ko has been serving roadside sushi for crowds of young Vietnamese and expats for a couple of years now.
Near the intersection with Hoang Dieu Street is BBQ Lua restaurant at 33 Vinh Khanh Street. The specialty here is grill-it-yourself barbecued meat. A small coal-fired stove is placed on your table onto which you lay chunks of marinated beef, pork, goat, and fish.
Nguyen Thuong Hien Street in District 3
U.K.-based Time Out in 2019 listed District 3 in downtown Saigon as one of the neighborhoods worth a visit and advised food enthusiasts to head to Nguyen Thuong Hien Street to sample its popular fare.
The one-kilometer street, which is only 2.5 kilometers from Ben Thanh Market, is lined with eateries where people open their shop from noon until midnight.
The most popular snack, easily found on this street is banh trang tron (rice paper salad). It is made of shredded rice paper mixed with dried shrimp, beef jerky, shredded squid, roasted peanuts, boiled quail eggs, shredded green mango, fried shallots, and fresh herbs. Vendors always add sweet spices, chili sauce and kumquat juice to make the flavors even more varied.

In addition, foodies can try a Vietnamese sandwich with beef that cost VND17,000 ($0.7), bun bo hue (Hue-style beef noodle) at Huong Giang restaurant and fermented pork at Ms. Nguyet’s stall.
Settle down to some snails and shellfish, a classic Saigon night out – at A Soi's stall where oysters, clams, crab claws, sea snails and local beer all grace the menu.
Near the intersection with Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai streets there are several large ‘juicers’ where all number of tropical fruits are freshly squeezed into plastic bottles to take away.
Su Van Hanh Street in District 10
Su Van Hanh Street, home to a series of shopping malls that make up the city’s fashion paradise, is a long, lively street between Ngo Gia Tu Street and Nguyen Chi Thanh Street jam-packed with street food stalls.
This street’s specialty is banh xeo (crispy pancake), a popular dish in the central region and Mekong Delta. Dozens of vendors along an apartment block have been serving small banh xeo cooked on circular trays over flaming, coal-fired barbecues for more than a decade.

At the corner with Hoa Hao Street there’s a good Chinese-style noodle outlet called Tai Phat where foodies could try mi vit tiem (egg noodles with duck in a deeply aromatic broth), a popular dish of Chinese migrants in Saigon. The noodles are sold from a classic noodle trolley decorated with painted dragons and scenes from Chinese mythology.

…de a erachter krijg ik bijna niet meer uit mijn bek.
Al eerder schreef ik over het egocentrische gedrag van de Vietnamezen met voordringen in winkels, het verkeer, wachtrijen, ja, waar eigenlijk niet. Zelf op TV gebeurt het en wordt het steeds erger.
Wij hebben een abonnement op K+ omdat dit de enige is, waar ik MotoGP en F1 kan volgen. Tour de France, Giro en Vuelta zijn een paar jaar geleden helaas al de nek omgedraaid, ongetwijfeld ten faveure van de vreselijke nagesynchroniseerde Chinese soaps, die zelfs door mogen gaan als de één of andere hoogwaardigheidsbekleder is overleden en alle andere zenders –op zich vaak wel terecht- op zwart gaan.
Dezelfde idioot, die dat regelde, zit denkelijk ook aan de knoppen van de commercials.
Al heel lang erger ik me mateloos aan minuten durende reclameblokken van uitsluitend bovengenoemde firma, waarin rustig dezelfde commercial een paar keer achter elkaar wordt vertoond. Regelmatig worden interviews onderbroken voor dit soort ellende. Maar zo erg als gisteren heb ik het –gelukkig- nog niet vaak meegemaakt. O ja, alles is in het Vietnamees, dus je kunt Fox, die de sport uitzendt, weinig verwijten.

- Soms is tijdens de race de onderste 1/3 van het scherm niet zichtbaar vanwege een geschreven commercial.
- Zo ongeveer tegelijk met het over de finish komen van Quarteraro, de nr. 3 in de wedstrijd kwamen de ellendige commercials weer. Toen die afgelopen waren was zo ongeveer de laatste rijder binnen.
- De interviews met de nummers 2 en 3 werden onderbroken. Alleen dat met winnaar Jack Miller werd volledig uitgezonden.
- Tijdens de huldiging… jawel.

Zoals het nu overkomt wordt je leven beheerst door ongenoegen en dat is slecht voor je lichaam en geest.

Een paar weken geleden heb ik het stof afgeblazen van het plan dat ik vorig jaar in de kast had gelegd toen de tweede Covid-golf begon. Maar er zitten nogal wat haken en ogen aan een terugkeer, problemen, waar ik in veel gevallen geen invloed op kan uitoefenen.

Thanh & Kim (1)
Een paar dagen geleden heb ik in en rond het huis een fotoshoot gedaan met Kim & Thanh. Van beide heb ik al eerder foto’s geplaatst. Thanh is die met het tekentalent, Kim één van de meest zelfbewuste kinderen die ik ken.
Ik had een week daarvoor een briefje gemaakt voor de ouders met dit verzoek. Kim speelde het slim. Haar vader (van de rijstpellerij uit mijn boek) had geen tijd om het te lezen en vroeg Kim, wat erin stond.
“Fred wil foto’s van ons maken en doet dat helemaal gratis!”
“OK”.
Beide dames zijn 10 jaar en zitten in groep 4. Maar ze gedroegen zich als professionele modellen: uiterst gedisciplineerd èn enthousiast. Ik hoefde maar te wijzen en een enkele keer wat voor te doen en het werd uitgevoerd. Een genoegen om mee te werken.
Ik zal de komende dagen nog wat meer foto’s uit de shoot plaatsen.`

Journey back in time during northern mountainous watering season
Hanoi-based photographer Vu Ha Nam has visited Bat Xat, a mountainous district in northern Lao Cai Province, five times since 2013 to capture local life during watering season.
Dawn lights a terraced rice field during the rainy season at Sang Ma Sao, a commune in the western part of Bat Xat District.
Nam, 37, obsessed by the annual highland watering season in May-June, has yet to return to Bat Xat this year due to the fresh Covid-19 outbreak. During his previous visits he had accumulated a collection of photos depicting the landscape and people here.
Waterlogged terraced rice fields during summer are a tourist specialty of the northern mountainous region.
Farmers typical flood their fields soon after the first summer rains and start transplanting rice seedlings for the new crop. Watering season lasts from late May to the end of June.
Bat Xat District has more than 3,000 hectares of terraced fields, with 70 percent of the terrain being mountainous.
This photo was taken in June 2020, with waterlogged fields appearing in harmony with newly transplanted rice seeds in Sang Ma Sao.
In Muong Hum, a remote commune around five kilometers from Sang Ma Sao, local women flock to their fields to plant new rice.
Bat Xat is home to ethnic minority groups H'mong, Dao and Ha Nhi.
"The image of a little girl who followed her parents to the fields to plant new seedlings in Muong Hum was an impressive moment for me," said Nam.
It is not unusual to see younger children help their families on the fields.

The road to Ngai Thau is more difficult due to its sloping hills and winding roads, and thus is also more fascinating.

"When they meet strangers, they are often shy, but quickly get used to being photographed," said Nam.
Traditional "trinh tuong" houses with yin-yang tiled roofs are a highlight among rice terraced fields in A Lu Commune. Built by ethnic Tay and Nung minorities, these houses comprise a mixture of clay and mud.

Nha Trang: beaches are just one of its attractions
Nha Trang is well-known as a beach destination, with its pagodas, temple towers, and marine world display also boasting charm.
Hon Chong in Nha Trang is a complex of rocks stacked together and the surrounding scenery is a tourist attraction on its own. It stands 3 km northeast of the central town's center.
The Yen Hon Noi Island is famous for its wild and tropical beauty with a sandy promenade that is a rare, gorgeous sight, especially from atop Du Ha Mountain, which takes 200 steps to climb.
The Tri Nguyen Island bustles with the activity of a thriving fishing village. The island hosts the Tri Nguyen Aquarium that is designed like a giant ship with four large tanks forming its basement.
This hosts hundreds of marine species. On the second and third floor are restaurants and souvenir shops. Visitors can also enjoy a tour to observe the daily life of a busy fishing village at close quarters.
The emerald moss carpet on Nha Trang Beach, about 50 meters from Tran Phu Bridge, is another major attraction. The best time to visit this place is between 6-9 a.m. when the tide is low.
The beautiful sight draws thousands of locals and tourists during weekends. It is a photographer’s delight and the cameras are always out.
The mystery and charm of the Ponagar Tower sparkle with more magic at night. This Cham temple tower is located on top of a hill about 10 m above sea level, at the estuary of the Cai River in Vinh Phuoc Ward.
This is one of the largest Cham cultural heritage vestiges in the country and has several architectural features to wonder at and admire.
The Nha Trang Cathedral, located on Bong Mountain, is 12 meters high and is a lovely example of French architecture. It was built by Fr. Louis Vallet, with work starting in 1928 and being completed in 1933. His grave is placed at the foot of the Bong Mountain.
To create space on the top of the mountain to build the church, about 500 mines were reportedly used. The church is built with gritstone and concrete bricks. Its architecture is similar to its peers in Sa Pa and some other places in Vietnam.
The Long Son Pagoda was built in 1886 on a 3,000-square-meter plot at the foot of Trai Thuy Hill. It has a 1,500 square meter main hall.
On the Trai Thuy Hill, a giant 24 m high white statue of the Buddha, built in 1963, exudes peace. The Vietnam Book of Records has recognized this as the largest outdoor Buddha statue in the country.
The Institute of Oceanography is nearly 100 years old and located next to Cau Da Port, about 6 km from the town center.
This is a leading marine research facility in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Visitors can discover the sheer diversity of the ocean world as the institute has about 24,000 samples of marine life with more than 5,000 species, including many that are very beautiful, exotic and rare.
The April 2 Square in front of Tran Phu Beach hosts major cultural events, and has become a gathering place for entertainment and sporting activities. Feel the pulse of local life by hanging out here and watching the fun unfold.
Nha Trang is the capital of Khanh Hoa Province which is an economic and tourism hub of Vietnam's south-central region.

The Long Son Pagoda was built in 1886 on a 3,000-square-meter plot at the foot of Trai Thuy Hill. It has a 1,500 square meter main hall.
On the Trai Thuy Hill, a giant 24 m high white statue of the Buddha, built in 1963, exudes peace. The Vietnam Book of Records has recognized this as the largest outdoor Buddha statue in the country.
The Institute of Oceanography is nearly 100 years old and located next to Cau Da Port, about 6 km from the town center.
This is a leading marine research facility in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Visitors can discover the sheer diversity of the ocean world as the institute has about 24,000 samples of marine life with more than 5,000 species, including many that are very beautiful, exotic and rare.
Nha Trang is the capital of Khanh Hoa Province which is an economic and tourism hub of Vietnam's south-central region.
The provincial tourism industry has set a revenue target of VND17.5 trillion ($758 million) for this year, welcoming over five million visitors, predominantly domestic, given the Covid-19 situation.

Moeilijk. Op zich is dit een gebied waar ik niet echt in geïnteresseerd ben en wat ik eigenlijk alleen van een afstand volg.
De afgelopen jaren zijn er heel veel grote hotels langs de boulevard gebouwd. Ook ten noorden van Nha Trang, wat op de foto rechts boven te zien is aan de andere kant van de brug. Een jaar of 15 geleden was daar nauwelijks iets van hotels te bekennen.
Dezelfde ontwikkeling zie je nu bij het vliegveld. In Vietnam Deel 2 werd daar wat dieper op ingegaan.
Mijn vermoeden, niet gestaafd door ook maar een flintertje hard bewijs, is dat veel van die vooruitgang in handen komt van de rijken, die dat toch al zijn.
In Vietnam heb ik daar al het e.e.a. over de voorafgaande 5-jaars-periode geschreven. We zijn nu –o, hoe toevallig- weer 5 jaar verder en weer reageert Leeqnl.

Hoeveel de prijzen gestegen zijn weet ik niet.
Studie
De indruk bestaat, dat het onderwijs steeds slechter wordt. Minder kennis noodzakelijk om te slagen. Smartphone en gamen zijn belangrijker.
Arm en rijk
“We hebben het idee dat de kloof tussen arm en rijk alleen maar groter is geworden. In ieder geval niet kleiner!”
Deze kan wat mij betreft gewoon blijven staan.
Levensstandaard
Meer huizen, scooters, auto’s geluids- en karaoke-installaties. Maar of dat ook een hogere levensstandaard impliceert
Mentaliteit
“De hele gemeenschap heeft steeds meer van “money en mackeno” (Vietnamees begrip dat “het interesseert me niet” betekent).”
Voor mijn gevoel is dit gedrag explosief gegroeid.
Korte-termijn-denken
“Ook het korte termijn-denken vindt steeds meer toepassing: ik moet NU geld hebben, ik moet NU veel verdienen, ik moet NU een auto en een groot huis hebben, ik moet NU een hoge baan hebben. En dat nog het liefst zonder er iets voor te doen. Ik roep altijd wat schamper dat een lange-termijn-visie een week overspant.
Voor zover ik daar zicht op heb proef ik hetzelfde bij de overheid. Denk aan mijn verhalen over antibiotica en die van Minh over onderwijs. Ik geef onmiddellijk toe dat een dergelijke mentaliteitsaanpassing niet iets is dat van de één op de andere dag gerealiseerd is, maar volgens mij wordt er zelfs niet eens over nagedacht.”
Hier merk ik alleen een enorme verslechtering. Niet alleen antibiotica en onderwijs, maar ook geluidsoverlast, pesticiden, roken, drinken, gamen etc.
Infrastructuur
Dat is één van de weinige zaken die inmiddels hier in de omgeving wel zijn aangepakt. Er zijn wat betere wegen met verlichting gekomen, een aantal nieuwe bruggen etc. Daar moet wel bij worden gezegd dat veel kleine en vaak doodlopende weggetjes door de boeren zelf betaald zijn vanuit een soort coöperatie waar ze lid van zijn.
Conclusie
“Een betere toekomst zien we (nog) niet voor Vietnam. Hooguit alleen voor een klein select groepje. Vijf jaar na de dag, dat we hier arriveerden, zijn we wat dat betreft een illusie armer en veel ervaringen rijker.
We blijven hopen!”
Nou, die hoop heb ik, als cynicus by nature, al geruime tijd geleden opgegeven, zeker als het over een landelijk gebied gaat als waar wij wonen.
Maar trek op basis van zowel bovenstaand als alles wat ik hier heb gepost je eigen conclusie.

Nguyen Tran Khanh Van, who is Vietnam's representative at the ongoing 2020 Miss Universe, has won massive support from fans back home for her attempt to introduce her country to the world, especially through the way she has dressed.
Many fans even said that Van has brought ‘the whole country’ to the beauty pageant, as several of her costumes were inspired by Vietnam’s features like water lilies and terraced fields, to name a few.
Van was crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2019 at the final night of the beauty pageant in the central coastal city of Nha Trang in December that year.
The 25-year-old woman is currently the ambassador of One Body Village, an organization that supports, rescues, and helps girls who are exploited, sexually abused or in danger, Miss Universe 2020 introduced Van on the pageant’s website.
One of Van’s most famous costumes at Miss Universe 2020, which is taking place in the U.S. state of Florida, was the ao dai, which is Vietnam's traditional costume, titled 'Ken Em' she wore for the national costume round on May 13.

The costume consists of a cocoon-shaped cover and a white ao dai which pays tribute to Vietnam’s silk weaving industry.
The ao dai set was also ranked among the 15 most spectacular national costumes at the 69th Miss Universe by online beauty pageant magazine Missosology, and the 20 best Miss Universe 2020 national costumes by Yahoo Lifestyle SEA.

Besides the costumes made for the competition, Van has also prepared well for her appearance at sideline events.
One vivid instance was the high-slit dress imitating water lilies, a famous flower in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
“The dress designer drew inspiration from the water lilies from Dong Thap Muoi [an inland wetland in the Mekong Delta],” Miss Universe Vietnam explained on its verified Facebook page.
“The pink flower is associated with the life of the people in southern Vietnam, with its edible branches popularly used to make local salads."

Ik denk dat landen als thailand, vietnam e.d. onleefbaar worden wanneer deze economieen boven een bepaald punt uitkomen en zichzelf ook moeilijk kunnen reguleren. Immens botte domheid?
Vorige week uitte ik in Vietnam Deel 2 mijn “ongenoegen” over de stupide wijze waarop ze de Honda reclameblokken dwars door interviews en finishes gooien.
Bij de F1zijn we daar altijd van verschoond gebleven: reclame voor simpele motorfietsen paste blijkbaar niet bij F1-auto’s.
Tot vandaag. Toen presteerde het zooitje hersenloze imbecielen het om met nog drie bochten te gaan voor Max de zaak te onderbreken voor een reclame voor Salonpas, een soort pleisters. En men kwam weer terug in de race toen Perez als nr. 4 al binnen was.
Datzelfde flikte ze nog een keer toen de nabespreking vanuit de studio net was begonnen.
@Deanevo. Je verwacht van mij toch hopelijk geen serieuze reactie over een “diepgaande visie voor de bevolking” als ze nog niet eens een enkele hersencel hebben om te begrijpen dat je van een race ook de finish wil zien, ook al ligt de winnaar 8 seconden voor.

Vietnamese police captain disciplined for not helping resident seize robber

A Hanoi police officer has been warned and transferred from his current position for not helping a taxi driver seize a robber who had stabbed him.
Police in the capital's Thanh Oai District on Monday evening gave a warning to Captain Nguyen Van Lam, a police officer of Cu Khe Commune, for his irresponbility in dealing with a robbery that occured in the district a day earlier.
Lam was also transferred to a team in charge of criminal judgement execution and legal assistance of the district police.
The robbery occurred on Sunday afternoon, when 45-year-old Nguyen Tran Minh, a taxi driver, was stabbed in the chest by a man who had booked his taxi service before, according to the results of an investigation.
Despited being injured, Minh, a Hanoi resident, managed to get off the cab and struggled with the man who attempted to rob him.
When the struggle took place, Lam was standing near the scene but he did nothing to help Minh other than gluing his eyes to his mobile phone.
Locals assisted Minh in subduing the robber and handed him over to the commune police later.
A clip of the incident was posted on social media later the same day, showing a police officer who was standing nearby the scene but took no action to seize the robber.
After verification, local police confirmed the officer to be Lam and the robber to be 51-year-old Pham Sy Sau, who had been hunted by police in Thanh Hoa Province for murder.
In his report about the incident, Lam said the robbery occurred when he was on the way to perform his tasks related to citizen identification cards. Lam explained that he used his phone to call reinforcements from the commune police.
Lieutenent General Nguyen Hai Trung, director of Hanoi’s Public Security Department, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that Lam had been warned for “being indifferent and irresponsible in helping a resident catch a robber.”
However, public opinion commented that the disciplinary action against Lam is too light and inappropriate since his behaviors are unacceptable, badly affecting the image of the police force in the public eye.
Regading such comment, Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesman of the Ministry of Public Security, said that agencies concerned have grasped such feedback and will review the case.
“Authorities are currently reviewing the case," the lieutenant general said.
"The review will be performed in a right order."
Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Chu Ngoc Anh on Monday gave a letter of commendation and a reward of VND10 million (US$435) to Minh for his bravery in seizing the robber.
Hanoi police also offered a similar letter to Minh on Tuesday.

After verification, local police confirmed the officer to be Lam and the robber to be 51-year-old Pham Sy Sau, who had been hunted by police in Thanh Hoa Province for murder.
In his report about the incident, Lam said the robbery occurred when he was on the way to perform his tasks related to citizen identification cards. Lam explained that he used his phone to call reinforcements from the commune police.
Lieutenent General Nguyen Hai Trung, director of Hanoi’s Public Security Department, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that Lam had been warned for “being indifferent and irresponsible in helping a resident catch a robber.”
However, public opinion commented that the disciplinary action against Lam is too light and inappropriate since his behaviors are unacceptable, badly affecting the image of the police force in the public eye.
Regading such comment, Lieutenant General To An Xo, spokesman of the Ministry of Public Security, said that agencies concerned have grasped such feedback and will review the case.
“Authorities are currently reviewing the case," the lieutenant general said.
"The review will be performed in a right order."
Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Chu Ngoc Anh on Monday gave a letter of commendation and a reward of VND10 million (US$435) to Minh for his bravery in seizing the robber.
Hanoi police also offered a similar letter to Minh on Tuesday.
