Some of the more technically minded of you out there will probably have already figured this out already but for those of you who haven't or those of you who've forgotten, here's a little guide to getting TomTom to speak to you via BT headset/handsfree kit.
A long long time ago (in a galaxy far far away), news of a little hack you could perfom on Smartphones came to light that would enable you to hear every sound the phone made via BT headset. I think it was discovered after the E200 came out. Anyway, the hack was simple, go into the task manager, kill the process cdial.exe and the press/hold the call/answer button on your headset and it should connect to the device. From then on every sound that came out of the device would play through the headset. You could even use it with voice command apps but obviously you'd have to press a button on the phone itself to activeate the app (usually record key).
A similar hack was found after the Universal came out. If you edited the following registry key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREOEMVoiceCommandPath"
to point to "Program FilesVoice CommandVoiceCMD.exe"
After doing that, all you had to do was connect your headset to the device by pressing/holding the answer/call button on the headset and MS Voice Command would jump into action. The good thing was the after you had used voice command the headset would stay connected. Although, if you don't want to have Voice Command comming on everytime you connect, you cant just leave the path blank and it will still work.
Now as far as i know, the Smartphone hack works on all Smartphones. However, the PPC hack may not work on all PPCs. Give it a try and experiment
Now for the TomTom bit. A guy came into the IRC channel today asking if he could get TomTom's direction to play through a BT headset. We had a think for a minute and then i remembered the old hack. We told him how to perfom it and low and behold it worked but even better is that it worked while TomTom was on and connected to a BT GPS device. Now i for one didn't know that you could have more than one BT device connected and working to a phone at the same time but there you go.
Why would you want to do this? Depends how quiet your device is/how loud your car is. Also, if you have a BT car kit, you should be able to play it through your car speakers too!
